Making Compost FAQs
1. Why does my compost smell?
Compost will start to smell if you have too many nitrogen rich materials (greens) and if it gets too wet. This means that fresh air can't get in to the pile which then becomes acidic. Adding some garden lime will help in the short term but the best way to avoid smells is to make sure you have a good mix of greens and browns. (carbon rich) turning the pile will also help.
2. How do I stop rodents getting into my compost bin?
Add grass clippings to increase heat and turn regularly. Wire garden mesh can be used to create a physical barrier. Rodents are attracted by fod scraps and will nest in undisturbed areas. Frequent turning of the compost will deter them from entering your heap.
