We are all ready to plant our beds, except for the two in the middle which were planted up in a double dig bed in the middle of winter, but hardly grew at all. Two weeks ago we added the minerals that were made up for us after we had our soil tested.
Picture right middle is the growth after 2 weeks. The difference is amazing. It's hard to compare other plants that we already planted in the winter like the leeks on the left, as we haven't added any minerals, but also they haven't grown much in the last 2 weeks, a little as it has got a lot warmer, but the difference to the middle beds is very noticable.
So I've got nothing to report but good news.
Lots of volunteers have been coming since it warmed up and we have all beds ready for the rain tomorrow Friday as it's been very dry we are waiting for that welcome water before we plant.
I have had one volunteer who has been doing community service and has been coming every day for 6 weeks, so all those heavy jobs that just don't get done with a 67year old + woman leading the pack. But she is good at delegating, so we have our tool shed rotting floor ripped out ready for a new roof before it gets replaced. A lot of our beds double dug. Liquid fertilizer made with horse poo. Rusted signs cleared and replace. Tools cleaned and oiled. Leaves leaves and more leaves moved into bins to make soil for next years seed raising. Lots of compost made. Compost added to beds and just lots of other little things he too responsibility for.
I can only recommend to any other community garden to take on one person at a time to do community service. It has been good for gardens and the person coming. He has enjoyed being out side, doing lots of hard physical work and meeting lots of good people. We have enjoyed have him as well.
Monday and Wednesday mornings have turned into our main work days, so come along if you want to learn about gardening and especially about soil at the moment. It's the 'IN' word in the garden world these days. For us it's to get more Nutritious Food growing in our gardens, so you too can learn to do that in your home garden. The best way to learn is to do it, so come join us and we'll show you how. We have two people who want to grow seeds and learn about propagation. One lady knows what she is doing and the gentleman wants to learn, so what a good match. Others are helping clear a big area that has been left for a couple of years so there we are going to grow lots of carbon to make lots of good compost. Come and join us it's lots of fun and some people just turn up for a cuppa. On Mondays we have a lady that sometimes brings alongs some home baking.
To finish off here is more signs of Spring having arrived:
Happy gardening
